Cooper’s coffee shop at the bottom end of Farsley Town Street is a real asset to the village and is rightly doing a roaring trade. It is one of those places that somehow manages to feel modern and olde-worlde at the same time.
The black frontage and elegant, Victorian-style sign suit its surroundings perfectly, the vibrant hanging baskets outside the shop contrast beautifully with the paintwork, making the place seem fresh and inviting.
Cross the threshold and you are given a warm welcome by staff. The cafe is cosy with half a dozen or so tables inside and even two comfy looking lounge chairs next to a log burner just begging to be lit.
There’s more space outside, with another half dozen tables in a pleasant enclosed courtyard which is a real sun trap and great if you have kids and want to let them off the leash so-to-speak.
There’s a relaxed air about the place, with a rack of well-thumbed newspapers next to the door and specials chalked up on wall boards
It’s the kind of place you’d want to go to for more than just lunch, which, by the way, is something they do very well.
The menu is clear and concise and uncluttered – that said there’s something for everyone and staff are happy to cater for specific dietary requests.
All of the eggs are free range, other produce is fair trade and locally produced in the village. They do a magnificent full breakfast, of course, but you can also opt for things like porridge with honey or sugar (£2), pancakes (£2) or a fresh fruit salad (£1.70).
In terms of more hearty meals, there’s vegetable lasagne (£5.70), steak and ale pie (£5.95) and sausage and mash (£5.95).
There’s also a good range of hot and cold sandwiches, ranging in price from £2.10 to £2.80, to nothing to break the bank. We ordered a BLT and a free range chicken sandwich with tarragon sauce and lemon mayo (both £2.40). There’s a choice of four breads with each sandwich and all come with a nice, crisp salad.
They were delivered in good time and tasted fantastic. We also ordered two black coffees at £1.60 apiece, which brought our bill to £8.
There’s a lot of places in Leeds which could do with taking a leaf out of Cooper’s book, because they appear to have got everything right, from the pricing to the lack of clutter to the service, which is above reproach. There’s also free wi-fi access. The place is spotlessly clean throughout, meaning there’s very little to find fault with.
One almost wishes places like this were open in the evening too but then everyone deserves a rest.
